This is M. Sasek – new site live

Well, finally the new site is up. It’s still a bit of a work in progress, but hopefully it’s better than the last one.

Major changes are:

  • This news blog, which you can now follow using RSS or email
  • Information on the This is books, particularly which ones have been republished is now bang up to date
  • The other areas have all had a spring clean

In the new few months I hope to add:

I’d be really glad to hear what you think of it, and if you have any ideas about what you’d like to see here in future.

Thanks for visiting.

  1. I am enjoying the layout of the site and it’s very informative :)

  2. Thanks Jen! Glad you like it.

  3. Miroslav and I must have some relations! I’m czech and have the same last name!

  4. Anne, the site looks great, and this blog is a great idea! I’ll be sure to mention it to all my peeps. Okay, maybe not ‘peeps’, but at least to my blog friends. How’s that?

  5. Anne, the site is great as ever – thanks for updating it!

I still keep looking for anything Sasek related although my This is collection has been complete for quite a while now. (Some duplicate copies are always available at my bookshop in Kew).
Have you seen the bi-lingual version of This is Munich, published in 1971? The text in German and English is a bit more touristy and less humerous but it’s got some extra illustrations, especially of the great modernist (and hideous) developments!
I shall try and send you some pictures but I haven’t got a scanner at the moment.

  6. Hey Ward, and Ulrike. Lovely to see you both here. Do spread the word :)

I haven’t seen the other version of this is Munich, but would love to if you ever get the chance to scan it in.

All the best to you both!

  7. I received the re-issued ‘This is London’ book for my birthday. I had never heard of Sasek or this series before, but I am an instant fan! I looked on the internet to see if I could buy any prints of the paintings to frame. Do you know if any are available on line?

  8. Anne, thanks for this site.

As a kid growing up in Montreal I discovered M. Sasek’s books (in French) at my public library and enjoyed them a lot.

I hope the re-issues bring him the recognition he deserves. Not sure how many hits you get on the site, but be assured it’s worth maintaining it.

If you have the time and resources, it would be interesting to know where his books were/are the most popular. US? UK? Elsewhere in Europe? Just curious.

    Thanks and all the best.

  9. I’ve just discovered M. Sasek’s work and have fallen in love! I run the children’s department of an independent bookstore in Western Massachusetts and have ordered in everything that is reprinted. I want them for the store, and to start my own M. Sasek collection. Thank you so much for such an informative, and attractive, website! I’m glad to know he has such followers, even if I’m late to the game.

  10. First, I love these books! I saw the This is London in the bookstore on our last day & bought it immediately. I’ve treasured it ever since. I keep seeing mentions of a “This is Madrid.” Does this book exist? And if so, where is it available for purchase? Thanks so much!!!

  11. I have loved Sasek’s work for decades! I checked out every “this is..” book I could get my hands on from our small public library as a kid. I was thrilled to find an updated version of “This is San Francisco” while racing through the SF airport a year ago. I hadn’t seen this book for about 40 years and seeing it literally stopped me in my tracks! I purchased it immediately and found myself sharing it with perfect strangers including the cashier and those next to me on the plane. It was like finding a long lost friend! Can anyone confirm the medium Sasek used for his paintings? I assume It is water color but would love confirmation of that.

  12. I am lookinf for some editors information.
    Who was his editor?
    Do you know his relations?
And for how long where not issued the books, that is to ask, if ever there was a stop in printer some of the books.?

  13. These books are new to me and I’d like to be able to see a few pages of This is London, on-line. Any ideas of where I might find this?
